SKETCHUP: Create a Caravan 1 (Papaw’s Cabin)

INTRODUCTION

This tutorial uses the Papaw’s Cabin model from http://www.tinyhappyhomes.com/site/models/gallery/papaw-s-cabin 

PREPARATION

1) This tutorial uses Sketch Up 2013 version.
2) Set Architectural format for the Units.
3) Create a new document, save it as “papaw-cabin”.
4) Select Toolbars; Getting Started and Views.

STEPS

1) Create the cabin base.

1.1) Click the Rectangle Shape button, click the beginning and ending point (just make a simple rectangular shape as shown below), type 8’,16’  and press Enter key.
1.2) The shape automatically resizes to the input values.
2) Raise the cabin height.
2.1) Click the Pull/Push button, click the face of the rectangle and move up a little bit, then type 7’ and press Enter key.

3) Front Door.

3.1) Create the wall border panel
3.2) Paint the border and the wall.
3.2.1) Colors-Name(Red) for the Border
3.2.2) Choose Brick and Cladding (Cladding_Siding_Tan).
3.3) Split the floor border edge into 3 parts; select the bottom edge of the front wall, right-click+select divide, type 3 and press Enter.
3.3.1) Outcome:
3.4) Draw the Door Panel with 6’ height standing exactly on the middle edge line in Step 3.3.1.
3.5) Create 2” inch door panel width by using Offset tool.
1 - Click Offset Button and then select the Door Panel. Make sure the Door Panel Face turns blue.
2 - Click, move inside a little bit and then type 2” and press Enter.
3.6) Push the bottom edge of the Door Panel down to the floor.
1 - Click Select Button.
2 – Click the line.
3 - Click the Move Button.
4 – Click the line and move it down. Make sure the blue axis guide line is shown on the screen.
3.7) Using Push/Pull Button, create the Door.
1 - Push the Door 4” inside.
2 – Paint the inner side of the Door Panel with White Colour.
3 – Paint the Door with Red Colour.

4) Paint the rest of the wall

1 - Copy the texture on the front wall and paint to the rest of the cabin wall.

5) Roof Section.

5.1) Duplicate the top face of the cabin.
1- Click the Select Button.
2- Double-Click to Select the Face and the Edge.
3- Click the Move Button.
4- Press [CTRL] key.
5- Click the area and move up. Make sure that you are moving along the Blue Axis.
5.2) Shape the roof
1- Draw a line connecting the mid points.
2- Select the line and move it up for 4’.
3- Draw a line to close the Front Face.
Outcome:
 
4- Do the same for the Back Face.
5- Draw 6” lines extending from each of the corner.
6- Draw lines to connect the end points
7- Delete the extension line at the peak of the triangle.
8- Outcome:
5.3) Duplicate the Roof shape to the back.
1- Click the Select Button.
2- Double-click the Roof Shape Face.
3- Click Move Button.
4- Press [CTRL] Key.
5- Drag the Face to The Back.
6- Type 16’ for the exact length of the roof.
7- Connect the end points to close the Face.
8- Paint.

6) Group Objects

6.1) Group the Roof Section as “Roof”.
1- Click any point on the Roof Surface for four times until all faces and edges are selected.
2- Type a name “Roof”.
6.2) Group the cabin body as “Body”.
Save your work.
