SKETCHUP 2013 Getting Started 101

STEPS

1) Run Sketchup 2013.

2) Select Template and click “Start Using Sketchup” button.

e.g. Simple Template – Feet and Inches.

3) Save as myhouse.

3.1) Go to menu File/Save.

4) Start with Getting Started Toolbar.

4.1) Go to menu View/toolbars…
4.2) Select “Getting Started” only and click Close.

5) Main Application window.

5.1) You will see the following menu and toolbar.
5.2) and you see the origin of the three axes x,y,z (marked by red, blue and green color respectively).
You may also see the dummy model near to the origin.

6) Model Info.

6.1) Go to menu Windows/Model Info.
6.2) Most of the important general settings for your model can be set here, e.g. the measurement units.
Setting the right measurement unit is very important as there are several formats available e.g. inches and centimeters.

7) Draw Rectangle.

7.1) Click the Rectangle button.
7.2) Click at the origin (the intersection point of the three axes x,y,z).
7.3) Drag to the right direction, click and lift your finger from mouse button.
You will get a rectangle.

8) Pull the rectangle face upward.

8.1) Click the Pull button.
82) Hover your mouse over the face of the rectangle until you see dotted patterns appear on the face (which means that the face is selected and ready for editing.)
8.3) Click and drag the mouse upward to create a box that hides the model.

9) Draw a line.

9.1) Click Line button and hover your mouse on the line at the top front edge of the box until you see the Help Text “Midpoint”.
9.2) Click the Midpoint and drag your mouse another midpoint at the top back edge of the box.
9.3) Outcome:

10) Pull the line upward.

10.1) Click the Move button.
10.2) Hover your mouse over the line that you have created in Step 9.
10.3) Click the line and drag (move) it upward.
Make sure that your direction is perpendicular; this is shown by the help text “On Blue Axis” whenever your mouse direction is parallel to the Blue Axis (y Axis).

11) Done.

11.1) You have drawn a basic house shape.
11.2) Save your sketch.
